The most important thing to look for when shopping for an outdoor bench is whether it will be able to withstand the harsh outdoor elements it will be exposed to.  Look for a weather resistant wood as you want a bench which is specifically designed for outdoor use.  Keep in mind the climate your wooden furniture will be exposed to, as this will help you to pick the correct type of wood for your situation.  Some woods work better in particular climates.  If you are unsure, a great option is to go for woods which are all-weather.  These can withstand anything the weather has to throw at them.  Examples of all weather wood are teak, eucalyptus and cedar.

Maintenance of Wood Benches

It is also a good idea to try to see if any maintenance will be required to keep your wood bench looking its best.  And if you don't want to have to do too much caring for the furniture, opt for a low maintenance wood which will age beautifully without any effort on your part.

Maintenance of wooden benches can include annual treatments of the wood to maintain its color and to keep it looking new, and some require regular treatments to protect it from the elements.  Some woods do not require treatments at all, and some are optional depending on whether or not you want to keep the color.  Find out what is needed for your particular bench and its type of wood.  Treating the wood can also protect it from cracking or splitting in the future.  Another option is to paint your bench.  Instead of treating the wood to maintain its original color, apply a new coat of paint every couple of years.
